Sustainable Energy

Colorado, like the rest of the country and the globe, is in the midst of an economic and energy transformation. The cost of clean energy and energy efficiency technologies has plummeted, energy storage is quickly becoming more powerful and affordable and our ability to integrate renewable energy onto the grid is rapidly improving.

This transformation couldn’t be happening at a better time.

Colorado, with its abundant renewable energy resources and strong public support for clean energy, is extremely well positioned to take full advantage of these profound changes. In addition, our state has long struggled with air quality challenges, and we are already feeling the disruptive impacts of climate change, the effects of which are expected to become more frequent and intense. The sustainable energy transformation will reduce our carbon emissions, improve air quality and help protect communities that are impacted by pollution from dirty energy.

In moving our state toward a clean energy future, we will strengthen our economy and ensure that Colorado remains competitive, create a more resilient and efficiency energy system across the state, generate thousands of jobs and preserve our extraordinary quality of life.

One key Alliance project is the Colorado Energy Futures Initiative. The Alliance has assembled a diverse advisory group to guide an ambitious new study exploring the implications and trade-offs of scaling up sustainable energy in Colorado. The advisory group includes major manufacturers and other large energy users, electric utilities, local elected officials and state legislators from around the state and from both major parties, the clean energy industry, environmental groups, Governor Hickenlooper’s office and other key energy policy constituencies.

In moving our state toward a clean energy future, we will strengthen our economy and ensure that Colorado remains competitive, we will create a more resilient and efficiency energy system across the state, we’ll create thousands of jobs and preserve our extraordinary quality of life.

Our Goals

ONE

Set Colorado on an aggressive path toward a resilient economy powered by sustainable energy while ensuring that everyone enjoys the benefits of this sustainable energy transformation.

TWO

Help elected officials, industry leaders and others recognize the value of expanding renewable energy, energy efficiency and smart grid technology in Colorado.

THREE

Help communities impacted by the decline in fossil fuel-related jobs successfully navigate this transition.

Action Steps

• Commission an independent study assessing the economic and technical impacts of ramping up sustainable energy across Colorado, supported by a diverse advisory committee comprised of energy experts, elected officials, large energy users and other stakeholders.

• Collaborate with our allies to promote sustainable energy at the community level, pass key legislation and implement critical statewide policies.
